ISSUES

Australia's downstream oil industry has been built on a platform of refineries, producing fuel in Australia to supply a nationwide network of fuel distribution and retailing. This system has ensured security of supply of fuel and other petroleum products to all sectors of the economy and community.

This system is now under severe challenge, from a combination of new import sources, regulation that serves to advantage imports over domestic production, and new entrants to the industry. The regulation framework gives these new entrants a competitive advantage over the reinfer/marketers, so much so that the future of refining in Australia is threatened.

Through the active involvement of its members, the Institute provides responsible, professional and principled representation of the industry along with factual and informed discussion of petroleum issues.
