ABOUT AIP

Established in 1976, the Australian Institute of Petroleum has gained national and world-wide recognition as a key representative body of Australia's petroleum industry.

AIP's mission is to promote and assist in the development of a strong internationally competitive Australian petroleum products industry, operating efficiently, economically and safely, and in harmony with the environment and community standards.

Through the active involvement of its members, the Institute provides responsible, professional and principled representation of the industry along with factual and informed discussion of petroleum issues.

KEY OBJECTIVES

Effective dialogue with government and other stakeholders, supporting and linked with the activities of member companies, to ensure :

  • clear understanding of key issues that affect the industry in the formulation of government policies, regulations and public opinion
  • co-operative resolution of conflicts or differences facing the industry as a group
  • development of an economically robust and sustainable, internationally competitive industry.

Promote industry self-regulation, through which :

  • excellence is achieved in standards of industry safety and performance and product quality
  • due diligence and best practices are maintained at all times on industry safety, occupational health, and environment protection.

KEY STRATEGIES

Provide a key link between industry and government and, in particular, the Federal Government, to promote awareness and understanding of the petroleum products industry and encourage and influence supportive policies and programs.

Promote industry self regulation through development and promulgation of industry standards, codes of practice, training and accreditation programs, seminars and conferences and operation of oil spill response facilities.

Facilitate efficient development and implementation by member companies of policies and projects that meet industry objectives.

Inform the community generally about the industry, its activities and policies, and its significance to the national economy.

Liaise with other industry associations in Australia and overseas, and collaborate on matters where beneficial in the common interests of member companies, borrowing best practice and established industry standards.

STRUCTURE

The AIP Board, comprising chief executives and other senior representatives of oil and gas companies operating in Australia, and the Institute's Executive Director, determines the Institute's strategic focus and ensures resources are appropriate to agreed tasks.

Within this strategic framework, the Institute's staff, located in Canberra and at the Australian Marine Oil Spill Centre in Geelong, is responsible for the work program of the Institute. This includes:

  • preparation and presentation of discussion papers and submissions to Federal, State and Territory governments on a wide range of industry related issues and legislation
  • preparation and implementation of self-regulatory codes of practice and operating procedures for member companies; development and conduct of training programs relating to industry facilities and the handling of industry products; and management of the industry cooperative oil spill contingency planning and response capability through the Australian Marine Oil Spill Centre
  • measurement and reporting industry health and safety performance and facilitation of accreditation to State and Federal environment protection and hazardous substances licensing systems and specifications.

The Institute collects and disseminates statistics and other information about the operations of the petroleum products industry and issues of public interest in the industry.

AIP also publishes a range of technical material, including training manuals, safety videos, codes of practice and safety guidelines.
